Otsego Lead Parent

Aubrey Haskill

I am Aubrey Haskill.  I have a bachelors degree in secondary education with a social studies major and a minor in English.  I spend my days running around with my 5 year old son and substitute teaching.  I also serve on the Head Start Policy Council and the NEMCSA board of directors.  During the summer, you might see me selling raspberries or baked goods at the farmer's market in Gaylord.  I am looking forward to serving the families of Otsego County as a parent organizer.

What is it like to be a part of the Otsego Parent Coalition?

A Great Start Parent Coalition is a group of parents working together to impact the lives of children in their community. Members are typically parents, grandparents, or foster parents of children under 12. Our mission is to increase parent’s skills, knowledge, and participation in early childhood planning and decision making. We want kids to grow up healthy, happy, and prepared for school and life.

Parent Coalitions meet monthly; a light meal and free babysitting are provided. It is not mandatory to attend the monthly meeting to be a member; however, it is strongly encouraged. In Otsego County, each meeting includes a guest speaker.

Past topics have included: positive parenting, sleep deprivation, school readiness, and family communication. The Otsego Parent Coalition works on a literacy program called Otsego Kids Read, which places book bins in area businesses and non-profit agencies for children to read in the waiting room. We also work a Skate and Swim fundraiser and participate in the Family Fun Fair every year. Most importantly, Parent Coalitions have fun!

Otsego Kids Read is just one of the many opportunities that are afford to you, the parent when you join up with us as a Parent Coalition.  Check back in the future for more pictures of the many activities that we are doing in the communities of Otsego County!
